Tailored for Success: The Journey of Thomas Carr Alumnus Oliver Pond
A Journey of Growth and Discovery
When Oliver Pond commenced at Thomas Carr College in Year 7, he described himself as a quiet and reserved student, still finding his place in a new environment. Over six years, supported by teachers, wellbeing staff and fellow students, he developed into a confident leader, ultimately serving as one of the College Captains in Year 12.
“I was quite quiet in Year 7. It was a new environment, and I wasn’t really putting myself out there. But with the support I received from my teachers, I ended up in leadership in Year 8, and from there it became this whole leadership journey.”
Alongside his personal growth, Oliver also flourished academically. Subjects that initially challenged him, particularly English and Mathematics, became areas of strength through perseverance and encouragement from staff.
“I wasn’t particularly good at Maths or English in Year 7, but by Year 8 my results really improved. By Year 9 I was studying MAGIS Maths. The support from teachers, wellbeing staff and student support officers made a huge difference because I always knew I could ask for help.”
Finding Confidence Through Opportunity
Throughout his time at Thomas Carr College, Oliver embraced the opportunities available to him. His leadership roles included Social Justice Leader, Middle School Captain and eventually College Captain. He was also involved in the Social Justice Team, Liturgy Team, public speaking programs and student initiatives.
Among his fondest memories were the College musicals, including Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Into the Woods.
“I think being part of a school musical creates a different sort of community. You see people after school, on weekends and at rehearsals, and it becomes like a little family. Some of my strongest friendships came from being involved in those productions.”
Oliver also credits programs such as WynSpeak, Youth of the Year and opportunities provided through the Catholic Development Fund with developing his confidence and leadership skills.
These experiences taught him that leadership was not simply about holding a title, but about contributing to a community, supporting others and having the courage to embrace opportunities.
The Staff Who Made a Lasting Impact
Throughout his journey, several staff members played an important role in encouraging Oliver’s ambitions.
Among them was Cath Leslie, Executive Assistant to the Principal, who helped connect him with the Australian Fashion Awards, an experience that would influence his future career.
“If it hadn’t been for Cath answering a phone call and supporting me through that opportunity, I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today. She’s incredibly humble about it, but it had a huge impact on my life.”
Oliver also speaks warmly of Jenny Thompson and his Legal Studies teacher, Alex Guedes, who encouraged him and supported him through challenges.
“The support came from everywhere. It wasn’t just teachers. Support came from Senior Leaders, Wellbeing Staff and people who took the time to check in and encourage me. That support network was incredibly important.”
One principle that has remained particularly significant to Oliver is “What you walk past, you accept.” It reflects the importance of integrity, accountability and maintaining high standards, values that continue to guide his approach to leadership and business.
From Student to Staff Member
Following graduation, Oliver returned to Thomas Carr College as its inaugural Faith & Mission Youth Leader. The role provided an introduction to professional life while allowing him to give back to the community that had shaped his journey.
“It was my first full-time job and a huge learning experience. It taught me professionalism, relationship-building and confidence. I worked with so many different teams across the College and every experience taught me something new.”
Oliver supported student leadership initiatives, liturgies, community events and wellbeing programs, further developing the interpersonal skills that would later prove essential in business.
“It gave me confidence to talk to people, build relationships and put myself out there. Looking back, working at Thomas Carr College had a really positive impact on my professional development.”
Having once benefited from the support of College staff, Oliver valued the opportunity to contribute to the development of younger students while strengthening his understanding of teamwork and leadership.
Building a Business and Following a Dream
While working at the College, Oliver began developing his own fashion label, Oliver Pond. What started as a passion project grew into an independent Australian menswear brand built around traditional tailoring, quality craftsmanship and contemporary design.
After launching his first collection online, Oliver was encouraged by family and mentors to establish a physical retail space. Through determination, hard work and an unexpected conversation with strangers over coffee, he secured a shopfront in Seddon, Melbourne, and opened his first menswear boutique.
“Everything seemed to fall into place. We opened the store and were fortunate enough to make a profit in our first week. It was a really exciting milestone”
Establishing a business at a young age has required financial commitment, personal sacrifice and perseverance. Behind the finished collections were countless hours developing products, working with manufacturers and navigating the challenges of building an independent fashion label.
Since opening, Oliver Pond has attracted customers from interstate and internationally, creating new opportunities within the fashion industry.
For Oliver, the business is about more than selling clothing. It allows him to express his creative vision, build meaningful customer relationships and contribute to Australian menswear through a brand that reflects his design philosophy.
Reflecting on his journey, Oliver recognises that many of the skills he relies upon as a business owner were first developed at Thomas Carr College.
“The confidence to talk to people, build relationships and take opportunities all started at school. Looking back, I can see how much those experiences helped prepare me for where I am today.”
His experience demonstrates that success rarely follows a predetermined path and that meaningful achievements often begin with the courage to pursue an idea.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Oliver’s advice to current students is simple: embrace opportunities, ask for support and never be afraid to try.
“There’s so much support available to you, but sometimes you just need to ask. If you don’t try, you’ll never know what you’re capable of achieving.”
He also believes in the importance of dreaming and setting ambitious goals. The philosophy that if you do not dream, your dreams cannot come true reflects his belief that every achievement begins with the willingness to imagine what might be possible.
His journey from a reserved Year 7 student to College Captain, staff member and business founder demonstrates how confidence, perseverance and the support of others can open unexpected doors.
Reflecting on his time at Thomas Carr College, Oliver remains grateful for the opportunities, friendships and sense of belonging that helped shape his future.
“Thomas Carr opened my eyes to what was possible. It taught me that if you put yourself forward, take opportunities and work through challenges, incredible things can happen. The support and community I experienced at the College continue to influence me today, and I’ll always be proud to be part of the Thomas Carr family.”
Oliver’s story is a reminder that the foundations of future success are often established long before the destination becomes clear.
