On Tuesday May 7, we invited the Malaya Borneo Veterans to a Remembrance Service held here at the College in the Chapel. We had a wonderful day with the Veterans and a number of special guests including Fr Jude Pirotta, Deputy Mayor Cr John Gibbons, Mrs Sarah Connolly MP, Mr Tony O’Byrne from the Catholic Education Office and Michelle Gillett, Principal of St Francis of Assisi Primary School and the School Captains. Our students were given the opportunity to talk to the Veterans and listen to their stories following the service during a luncheon in the College Dining Room.
Thomas Carr College has been associated with the Malaya Borneo Veterans for over ten years. Veterans were initially invited to the College to speak to students as part of the history program instigated by Mr Anthony Diamond. This marked the beginning of a great partnership between Mr John O’Regan from the Malaya Borneo Veterans and the College. We are one of only two Victorian Colleges that are allowed to carry a banner for the Veterans at the Melbourne ANZAC day march to the War Memorial, regularly participate in memorial events with the Veterans, including an annual event held at the College every May.
We are particularly grateful for the time we are able to spend with the Veterans and are very proud of the relationship shared between Thomas Carr College and the Malaya Borneo Veterans Association.
