The Permanent Diaconate was restored in the Church by the Second Vatican Council. The Church has three levels of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, Bishop, Priest and Deacon. For over a thousand years, those who were to be ordained priests were ordained deacons for only a few months. The Permanent Diaconate was restored by the Council and was made open to married men.

Deacons have a particular ministry which includes assisting the priest at Mass, proclaiming the Gospel and preaching. They are able to celebrate baptisms, witness marriages and preside at funerals. Many deacons are also appointed by the Bishop to serve in particular ministries such as school chaplaincies. There are currently seven deacons serving in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
