Feast of the Assumption Mass – ‘Mary Queen of peace, pray for us’.

 Our Assumption Term is filled with opportunities to celebrate our Blessed Mother paying particular focus to the month of August where there are five large Marian feasts;

  • August 2 Our Lady of the Angels
  • August 5 Our Lady of the Snows
  • August 13 Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners
  • August 15 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • August 22 Queenship of Mary

 As a College community, we joined together in liturgy on Friday 15 August to mark the Feast of the Assumption, one of the largest Marian feasts all over the world.

This Mass felt extra special with the presence of both Fr Jude and Fr Silvio, a Principal and Parish priest from Malta. Our Mass was filled with such rich imagery, ritual, music and symbols to reflect the loving grace of Mary and that of all woman. Mary is such beautiful role model of faith for all of us. She is the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of our Church. Even our patron Archbishop Thomas Carr pointed out the transformation of woman was by the second Eve, Mary the Mother of Jesus. He felt the protector of womanhood should sit under the patronage of Mary. Carr also went to add that “woman's role was the most notable of all”.

Many of you may wonder what the big deal about Mary is and why do we worship her? Well we don't, we pray to her as she continues to look after us on earth through her role as Mother of the Church. Mary is a very special and unique woman. She was a Jewish girl chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus and since Jesus is one with God the Father this also makes Mary the mother of Jesus and God. Mary was told very early in her life that God had a plan for her through a visit from an angel who told her she would give birth to God's son. Although Mary could have easily said no, she chose to say yes. This took great strength, courage and faith.

Mary absolutely adored her son Jesus and was his first and most faithful disciple. Even Jesus’ last instruction before His death, was to give Mary to us as our own Mother. May we honour Mary for the grace God showed her, in choosing her to be the earthly mother of His Son, and for her courageous spirit and trust in God’s word. Even our Holy Father Pope Francis at this very time prays through Mary for peace in our world. He repeats; “May the God of peace create in all of us an authentic desire for dialogue and reconciliation. Violence is not conquered with violence. Violence is conquered with peace!”

Once again, we had an overwhelming amount of staff and student volunteers in our Marian Mass as altar servers, procession bearers, readers, extraordinary ministers. Our choir which was led by Mr Cameron Stark did an outstanding job. He was also well supported by our instrumental staff and the fine servant leadership of three of our senior choir students; Samoana Petaia, Paul Tomelty and Ashleigh Parker who have really stepped up while our Head of Music is on leave. I must also highlight the wonderful work behind the scenes from our Catholic Identity Team, AV Technician, VET Team, Maintenance and Director of Operations.
