Mathematics, Science & HPE

The Mathematics, Science and Health & Physical Education Learning Area encompasses a broad range of disciplines across all year levels. It is an amalgamation all 3 former departments and, as such, provides an important role in catering to the individual needs of our students.

The curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.

Mathematics is a compulsory core subject from Years 7 to 10. In Years 9 and 10, students are placed in either Review, Core or Extended Mathematics classes depending on their ability.

Year 10
VCE General Mathematics (as an accelerated subject)

Year 11
Foundation Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Advanced General Mathematics

Year 12
Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics

National Curriculum
It is anticipated that all students benefit from access to the power of mathematical reasoning and learn to apply their mathematical understanding creatively and efficiently. The mathematics curriculum provides students with carefully paced, in-depth study of critical skills and concepts. It aims to help students become self-motivated, confident learners through inquiry and active participation in challenging and engaging experiences.

Thomas Carr College provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important science concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, of science’s contribution to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives. The curriculum supports students to develop the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues.

Science is a compulsory core subject from Years 7 to 10. The following electives are also offered.

Year 9
Guts and Stuff, Environmental Science

Year 10
Environmental Science, VCE Biology (as an accelerated subject) Psychology (as an accelerated subject)

Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics

National Curriculum
For Science, the National Curriculum, promotes six overarching ideas that highlight certain common approaches to a scientific view of the world and which can be applied to many of the areas of science understanding. These overarching ideas are patterns, order and organisation, form and function, stability and change, systems, scale and measurement, and matter and energy.

Health & Physical Education

The Health and Physical Education domain provides students with knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to achieve a degree of autonomy in developing and maintaining their physical, mental, social and emotional health. This domain focuses on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity in the lives of individuals and groups in our society.

Health & Physical Education is a compulsory core subject from Years 7 to 10. The following electives are also offered:

Year 9
Outdoor Education

Year 10
Health & Human Development, Human Movement, VCE Health & Human Development (as an accelerated subject), VETis Sport & Recreation (as an accelerated subject)

Health & Human Development, VETis Sport & Recreation, Physical Education

National Curriculum
For Physical Education this will begin in 2014. The Health and Physical Education domain provides students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary for the pursuit of lifelong involvement in physical activity, health and wellbeing.
