International Students (English)

We Welcome Students from all over the Globe

Thomas Carr College is a Catholic Secondary College. We offer classes from Year 7 through to Year 12. It is a policy of the school to offer some places to International Students.
Generally this would be students wishing to study for the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). This is a two year course in Victoria, Years 11 and 12. Given the structure of the VCE, Thomas Carr College normally enrols a student to begin Year 11 studies at the start of the school year which is the end of January. It is expected that International Students study a minimum of ten units over Year 11 and ten units over their Year 12 to ensure students have enough units to qualify for VCE; but also to ensure the required subjects to qualify for entrance to a Tertiary course the student may choose at the end of Year 12. Students should note that English is compulsory over both Years 11 and Year 12. Students then have a range of subjects to choose from to make up their particular study course. (See Curriculum list, Information about VCE studies at Thomas Carr College and subject information on the Thomas Carr College web site)

In general, students are  expected to enrol for two terms prior to commencing Year 11 studies. This time is used to prepare the student to study different subjects, to learn the language and to adjust to different teaching and learning styles. Depending on available places, the college is able to offer a place to a student in Years 7 to 9. Such students will be required to take extra English classes for at least ten weeks and will then join mainstream classes. (See Curriculum lists for further information)

By embracing international education, we believe Thomas Carr has the potential to significantly contribute to Australia's future, not only as a leader and example to other schools in this area, but also by producing internationally minded citizens equipped to participate in Australia's future engagement with the Asian region.

Our Student Exchange Program is forging strong ties with schools in Asia - particularly our sister schools in Japan, Sakurgoaka High School, Don Bosco II in Jakarta and Niulanshan First Secondary School in Beijing.

Study tours are also conducted to Japan, China and Indonesia. We also welcome International Students from countries around the globe. These students bring with them the experience of their countries and a desire to embrace Australian Education and culture that they will be able to take back to their own countries.

Our dedicated 'Friendship Centre' that houses our groups of exchange students from overseas provides ample evidence of our commitment in this area of education. In fact, our commitment to internationalism provides enormous opportunities for our students to develop an understanding of Asian languages and culture and so help them contribute as far better citizens of the 'global village' in their future lives.
