Year 7 Camp
As part of the Transition Program at Thomas Carr College, Year 7 students attend a four day camp at Phillip Island. The camp is an important and meaningful experience that provides students with the opportunity to build upon existing friendships, and establish new bonds with students in the same homeroom as well as the wider Year 7 cohort. The camp encourages the development of students’ social skills as they are required to participate as members of a group in a number of activities including; High and low ropes course, Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Team Rescue, Bouldering Wall, and beach walks. The program also features evening visits to two of Phillip Island’s premier attractions; The Penguin Parade, and the Night Prowl at the Koala Conservation Centre. The students are accompanied by Homeroom Teachers as well as a number of College staff thus providing the opportunity for students and teachers alike, to be seen in a different light. The environment on Camp enables everyone to experience new challenges and develop closer peer friendships and teacher-student relationships.
Pastoral Care Program
The Year 7 Pastoral Care Program is designed to support and nurture our students. The Program is aimed at creating stronger teacher and student relationships, developing the resilient nature of our students, promoting anti bullying strategies by developing respect in others as well as self respect, improving students work ethic by encouraging them to be independent learners and developing a pride in the College. The Program consists of four major topics; Learning Skills, Bullying, Habits of Mind and Building Respect in Self and Others. These areas are explored through a variety of activities such as guest speakers, small discussion groups, group activities and personal reflection.
Walk-a-Thon
Each year, in early September, our Year 7 students participate in the annual Walk-a-thon. This exciting event, allows our students to gain a better understanding of global poverty issues, and work together to raise money and provide support for those less fortunate then themselves. The day consists of a number of educational, exciting and entertaining events. Firstly, the students hear from a guest speaker from the Edmund Rice Foundation, who speaks to them about the work the Foundation do in Africa and other areas. It is a chance for the students to gain a fuller understanding of the foundation and in particular their work at the Sinon College in Tanzania. The walk-a-thon itself lasts for approximately 6km and is a chance for students to enjoy each others company, and hopefully some fresh air and nice weather. The day concludes with an entertaining performance by Valnga Kohzer, an African singer, musician and story teller.
